The challenge
Corten (weathering steel) is chosen specifically for the oxidized patina it develops as it ages — which means the fabrication has to account for how the material will look years later, not just on install day. It's also unforgiving of sloppy joinery, since the finish has nowhere to hide a weld.
What we built
M&R Welding fabricated and installed a Corten steel wall and integrated fireplace for a Roanoke apartment complex's shared outdoor space. The panels were cut, welded, and set to form a clean architectural wall line with a built-in fireplace opening, left to weather naturally into Corten's characteristic orange-brown patina — a finish that protects the steel underneath as it forms.
Materials
ASTM A588/A606 Corten (weathering) steel plate and panel.
